The best pool player in Denver,
may just be a Lady
By Justin and Nicky Richards
She may not be the best
pool player in Denver yet, but Karen (KC) Coffman is by far the most beautiful. A strikingly
graceful woman with long auburn hair and sensuous penetrating brown eyes.
Shooting pool has come
along way since the days of the hustler. In those days, smokey backrooms,
filled with cigar smoking good ol boys, and women not allowed. To be a
good hustler you had to play well enough to appear competitive but unable
to win, until the stakes went up. (and speaking of steaks stop by
Mickeys on 72nd and Broadway for one of the best steaks in
town)
There is always some
guy who thinks he knows how to play and I always tell them that I just
enjoy the competition of this game, however if given no choice, I will
take their money. I started playing pool in my early teens at a
neighbors house in Coal Creek Canyon, there wasnt much else to do or
it seemed like there was nothing to do. Im pretty sure I was a normal
Colorado kid. I didnt start playing seriously until I became a member
of the APA about 10 years ago. Cindy Plank is the northwest director for
APA and a good player as well. Our team went to Vegas for the National APA
Tournament in 94 and finished 2nd. We might have won the
whole thing but we were just so happy to be there that during the break before
the finals we spent time congratulating ourselves, had a few beers and
perhaps lost our concentration. That is something no one can take away
from me
2nd in the APA Nationals!
The
Nationals Tournament was such an exciting event. It was just like the
second Hustler with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. Over 100 tables and
perhaps as many as 2500 people can really make your knees knock and your
hands shake. My mouth went completely dry like I just chewed a dirt clod.
The announcer advertised the sponsors and the hotel and some other
commercials but I cant remember any of it. This was a strange feeling
thinking that all eyes were on me when in fact everybody else was feeling
exactly the same. Sort of like being at the Bronco game and thinking that
someone you have never seen before and will most certainly never see again
might recognize you, so try to look cool. The announcer for the Tournament
said something like Good luck and now
Ladies Bust your Balls. The
excitement was electric and that feeling is what Im chasing now. "The
great women players I see on ESPN inspire me and I know I want to be
there." -30-
