Cheap Shots Photography /Saidel Photography

Bev Saidel has been looking through the lens of a camera for most of her life. She began shooting film as a hobby, which quickly became a part-time profession while working for a marketing company in Southern California. Shortly thereafter, she began to learn the craft of stage photography at and for the Long Beach Civic Light Opera Company and became directly involved with the intricacy of working with stage lighting and dramatic portraiture.

After moving from California to Colorado, Bev started her own company, Cheap Shots Photography. Living in Colorado provided the opportunity to photograph the state’s spectacular mountain areas as well as the vast expanse of its eastern plains. With camera in hand, Bev’s portfolio includes images from Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming and feature many of the west’s National Parks. Ever broadening her range, she has also photographed images in Florida, Massachusetts, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Landscapes featuring the long view, wide panoramas and sunsets are a portion of what comprises the many images in her portfolio that reflect the beauty she finds in her surroundings. Bev is also fascinated by the macro view, close shots of natural objects as reflected in her repertoire of floral images.

Bev’s range includes not only landscapes and macro images, but also intimate portraiture, which she calls “environmental portraits.” These go beyond the ordinary headshot by using location, activity and apparel to showcase the person’s style thereby providing a singular, intimate portrait of the individual.

As an all-round photographer, Bev has used her expertise to photograph various events and notables. While in Denver, she provided event photography for the Center of International Studies, the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, the Internet Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Lottery, Denver Chapter of Executive Women International and for EWI’s International Conference which was held in Denver. Notables include Tim Wirth, Federico Pena, John Hickenlooper, Bill Owens, Marcia Johnson, and Michael Bennett. In addition, Bev developed three online photography courses that provide individuals with the opportunity to learn how to create images utilizing simple techniques.

Until recently, Bev was devoted to film. But times change and she took up the digital challenge whole heartedly. Be it film or digital, Bev continues to define herself as a “front-end” photographer and does not utilize the various types of specialized software, such as Photoshop, to manipulate the images once recorded. The majority of her work is hand-held and composed through the lens.

In 2008 Bev left Colorado and moved to Australia. Keeping the spirit of Cheap Shots Photography alive, she founded Saidel Photography to showcase her many photographic abilities. Her work can be viewed by appointment. You may contact Bev at saidelphotography@live.com for more information.
Bev has been creating images with Minolta brand cameras for 30 years and owns an SRT202, X-700 and DSLR Maxxum 5D.
