The World of Web TV The other day, alone in a strange city, without my laptop, I decided to venture into the world of Web TV. This was not my initial purpose but being internetless I was a little desperate. On advice from a friend, I entered the world of WOW! And its affiliate, The Good Guys. Reported as a place where one could log on for free, I approached a sales person to ask if I could indeed access the internet. Alas, their direct system was down, but their web TV terminal was active. I approached the terminal with some trepidation. There was a monitor (TV screen) a box of some kind on the top of the TV screen and a keyboard. I reached for the mouse no mouse! For a moment I just stared at the screen. No mouse! How could I overcome this? With my sense of adventure firmly in place, I put my fingers on the arrow keys after all, they work with Tetris I maneuvered poorly through the menu and was able to stumble into Hot Mail my email carrier of choice. Logging in, I was able to open my inbox and found several messages. As a novice, I was able to arrow down to the message I wanted to open and by pressing the enter key was able to read the message. It seemed awkward and took longer than my old tried and true point and click method. To reply, I had to arrow up and over to the toolbar. However I was unable to remove the unwanted text in the original message via the select and drag method to which I was accustomed. Being adventurous, I remembered the backspace key, which took longer, but sufficed. My response was entered. Then as usual, I tried to delete the original message along with several others that I had no interest in reading. I sat there unable to make that occur. How my right hand itched for a mouse! I gave up and then found myself unable to log out. Somewhat humiliated, I got back to Hot Mails log in screen and escaped via the front door of the store leaving an untidy system behind me. Web TV is propertied to be everything you ever wanted for accessing the World Wide Web without having to purchase a computer. Reported costs for the new and improved second-generation system were listed as follows: Service - $19.95 per month Box access including guide and remote control - $199.00 Wireless keyboard (optional) $49.95 So for $199.00 plus $19.95 per month you can access the World Wide Web. Your regular TV and telephone line serve as monitor and access points. The remote control will help you navigate around but without a keyboard you cannot input keyword searches, reply to email or input URLs. Because you have no CPU you cannot load software to do business or play games or perform office-based tasks. The Web TV brochure indicates that you can chat, limit access to mature sites, be a discussion group member and have 6 email accounts. But again, without a keyboard youd be hard pressed to input your communication for any of the "classic" features that come with your service. Is Web TV the wave of the future? Certainly the aspect of using your TV and phone line, rather than purchasing a real computer seems like a plus and the cost differential makes Web TV particularly appealing. But from my point of view, no TV will ever replace a computer. Give me that CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Call me old fashioned, but for the money, no gimmick will ever replace the real thing.

So Youre Heading Downunder... My brother-in-law, Davo, worries about the dim Americans who will descend upon his countrys shores in August 1999 for the Broncos game and in January 2000 for the Summer Olympics. After all, his exposure to me has caused him more than a little consternation -- hes rescued me from being run over more than one time. When I was a kid my parents taught me to look both ways before crossing the street. And that is a lesson that stuck. But when you are in a country where the traffic is going in an opposite direction than you expect it can be a little harrowing. After all, when we look left we expect to see traffic coming towards us and conversely, when we look right, we expect to see tail-lights. Hence the problem. Your brain does not expect to see tail-lights when you look left or headlights when you look right. Its when your body sets itself in motion to cross the street that you are in peril... oops! In order to ensure the safety of my countrymen and women, here are a few tips for those of you who intend to travel Downunder.
You should be prepared to hear about measurements in metric terms: meters rather than feet, liters rather than gallons, kilometers rather than miles, Celsius rather than Fahrenheit. Conversions can be a little complicated especially when the most typical weather report you will hear is "Mostly Fine". So heres a tip if you want to convert the temperature that you heard on the morning weather report -- "17 and Mostly Fine" from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Its approximate, but close enough to determine what to wear. Stated temp multiplied by 2 plus 30 (ex: 17 x 2 = 34 + 30 = 64 F.) The kph conversion is also fairly simple and luckily, most speedometers indicate miles and kilometers. If the car you have rented does not have both, a "klick" is approximately 6.6 tenths of a mile. So, when you are traveling at a speed of 100 kph, you are actually only traveling at about 60 mph. Not nearly as exciting as you thought! Rotarys are traffic circles. The vehicle on the right has the right of way, but you circle to the left. Pedestrian crossings are indicated with a sign that shows a mans legs from the knees down and includes a "natty" pair of shoes. Speed bumps are indicated with a sign that shows a symbol that I remember from "The Little Prince" - it looks like a snake that swallowed some dinner... Australians may refer to their country as "OZ" and often mumble and delete consonants and vowels from the written word. (I personally attribute this to rampant attacks from the countrys unofficial national bird -- the fly...). Canberra translates to "Canbra", Melbourne to "Melbin", Brisbane to "Brisbin", Sydney to "Syney". Those who reside in Sydney are often called "Sydneysiders". You may be greeted with the typical Australian greeting "GDay Mate" or "How ya going?" If you say "thank you" be prepared to hear "No worries" as the response. A "kiosk" is usually a place that sells food - meat pies are usually available - try one, you might like it. You will also find almost every ethnic cuisine represented and almost everything is available as "take away". Dont be shy try everything - Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, Greek, Japanese, Italian, Tai, and Australian that includes some of the best fish I have ever had. You will even find The Colonel, Burger King disguised as Happy Jack, McDonalds and amazingly enough, Taco Bell. (I particularly like their radio ads that discuss tacos and gorditas with an Australian twang.) If you go out for a meal you may find an "American
Hamburger" on the menu. Buyer beware - American Hamburgers usually
include a fried egg on top and "beet root" is a popular
accouterment. And hot-dogs (sausages), which you will find as stadium
fare, are a strange red color with less flavor than the heavy bread bun on
which they reside. Chili and sour kraut are basically unknown, so the
"works" may only include the hot dog, some mustard and the bun. And speaking of sightseeing, remember to visit the Aquatic Center at the Olympic site in Homebush Bay. Take your suit and spend the day. All conveniences are available, including "tucker" for when you get hungry. Remember theres something for everyone Downunder.
P.S. American Football is called "Gridiron".
"Footy" = Australian Rules Football.

For It or Against It... Take
Another Look
Commentary by Bev Saidel
The past few months and weeks have been filled with conversation centering on changing attitudes about guns. The Second Amendment Sisters and Moms Against Gun Violence marched on Mother’s Day, both groups raising issues about guns. Many feel regulation will become the first step taken by the government to restrict gun ownership. While others feel that regulation is necessary to protect children from harming themselves. There are many questions associated with these issues. Are the Moms who marched in the Million Mom March any more or less right than the Second Amendment Sisters? In this country, people have the right to raise questions, to speak their mind and to march to raise awareness. We live in a country where people are constitutionally given the right to free speech.
There is no question that there are issues. How could there not be? I know that the constitution gives citizens the right to bear arms. But I also know that parents have the right to live in a land where they do not have to be fearful of their children being gunned down at their place of education. These attitudes, opinion and feelings are valid, regardless of which side of the issue you prefer.
We have all heard the comments: parents do not pay enough attention to their children, we all have too much to do, we do not have the resources that we need, we do not share or hold dear the intrinsic values of family and integrity. And of course, we are all spoiled and we want what we want. But in this arena, we do not always get what we want and instead of taking a look at the central issues, we would rather point the finger away from those it should be pointed at.
In the political arena we seem to be missing the boat. Those for whom we vote seem to have the same disease. They seem to have “selective hearing”. Many of you associate this with men - those who never quite hear what “she” is saying. I would like to suggest that there are some new members to this club and gender is not an issue. In politics this disease is bi-partisan.
We all know that politics in the United States can be a dirty business. We have seen it, been taught it, and experienced it first hand. However for some reason, we seem to forget it. Each year at campaign time we are shocked to discover that many legislators feel they have the right to take money from special interest groups, to return favors to lobbyists and even ignore what their constituents want. Could this be any clearer than it is today? Our country is being torn over constitutional issues, voices are speaking out, struggling to be heard. And one of the largest issues is gun control. Should you have the right to own a gun with or without registration? Should there be enforced constraints vs. having none at all? Should anyone have the right to bear arms?
I know many people who complain about their elected officials. I often wonder how many of them actually vote? The right to vote is a constitutional given. People have fought wars over this central tenant of freedom. And yet we abuse it. We just do not quite get to the polls. And to add insult to injury, many of those who do vote make their decisions based upon 30 to 60 second television commercials that interrupt their favorite television show.
But there are also those who do make effort, those who do vote. And so the question becomes this, the question regarding selective hearing -- Are those you have elected into office responding in a way at the Statehouse or in the Halls of Congress that lets you know they have heard your voice? If you do vote, this is critical. If you do not vote, it becomes tragic because you have made a conscious decision not to be heard. And in the matter of being for or against -- do you know if your elected official is responding in a way that reflects the majority view of his or her constituency? If you do not know this, then why are you pointing the finger at anyone other than yourself?
Other than at campaign time, our elected officials tend to forget that We, the people have the right to be heard by those we elect. We, the people are the democracy, the power, the stuff that makes the United States work. When we are apathetic those we elect return that apathy and find their own way. Our job as We, the people is to remind our elected officials that we live in a country where ‘representative’ government rules the land, that we are here, that we do have a voice and that we will be heard. -30- Beverly A. something to talk about other than Elway's retirement but it will soon become very boring.

Denver Destroys Miami
Denver 38-3 Miami
1-9-99 Denver, Co.
by Justin and Nicky Richards
After only 29 yards in the last meeting (12-21-98) Terrell Davis showed the rest of the NFL there is a difference in playing a game that matters in Mile-High Stadium. 199 yards on 21 carries is a Denver playoff record. "I think the offensive line took my 29 yards in Miami personally", said Davis, giving the credit to the "big boys"upfront. Named as the MVP for the NFL Davis left the game with over 6 min remaining. It is going to be very hard for the Jets to go to Mile-High Stadium and beat the Denver Broncos.
Terrell 2KY
ards-No ProblemTerrell Davis is officially the "Greatest running back in Denver
history" and simply the best in the "league" right now. By reaching 2008
yards in a single season "TD" joins Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders and O.J.
Simpson as the only 4 men in NFL history to rush for Y2K in one year. He is a great role
model for kids.
Denver finishes 14-2 a new franchise record and John Elway throws 4 touchdown passes and
enters the "300 TD passes" club. Perhaps back in "offensive" game form
for the playoffs.
13-2 and on hold

13-1 Still the Best
12-13-98 Denver,Co.
by Justin and Nicky Richards
Still the best team in football but now with a bit more to prove, can we get to the SuperBowl?
While many fans hoped for an undefeated season if only to shut up those insuferable remaining"72" Dolfins, the fact remains the Dolfins are the only team to go undefeated. Dizzy Dean said "it ain't braggin if you can do it" and so another year goes by with no challenger to the crown of "best ever". You can bet the Monday Night Game December 21, in Miami will garner much attention, but not as much as if the Dolfins were trying to save history. Denver at 18 games without a loss ties the NFL record and many will argue Denver as "best team ever", so additional emphasis will be afixed to Mondat Night.
13-0 12-6-98
Shannon Sharpe, without a catch all game, caught the game winning touchdown late in the
fourth quarter and the Kansas City papers blame Jerome Woods.
This was Denver's first test of coming from behind in the fourth quarter all season and
this appears to be a team of destiny. Down by 10 in the 4th, Denver scored 14 points to
win the game 35-31. John Elway showed his mastery of the game once again to Marty
Schottenheimer by throwing for over 400 yards and clinching home field through
out the playoffs. Willie Green's catch on the "slant" and excellent run to the
KC one, set up "TD" for his 3rd rushing touchdown of the game to pull the score
to 31-28. Following the Sharpe 24 yard touchdown catch, Alfred Williams sacked Rich Gannon
on 4th down to seal the victory.
The idea of "clinching too early" is no longer a prelude to coasting into the
playoffs. It seems this team peaked last year and continues to get better. With all eyes
pointed toward a Monday night showdown with Miami the next challenge will be the New York
Giants in NY. Giant head coach Jim Fassel was at one time offensive coordinator for John
Elway in Denver. It remains to be seen if that will have any bearing on the Bronco-Giant
matchup.
With the possibility of a Denver loss comes the question would just another Super Bowl be
enough?
"Class of the NFL"
by Justin and Nicky Richards Nov 16, 1998
The Kansas City Chiefs showed a national TV audience on Monday Night Football what a frustrated (last years division winners) 4-6 team looks like after a merciless beating from the best team in football. The perfect 10-0 record is the result of a final score of 30-7 but don't be mislead, this game was never that close. The often maligned Denver defense smothered a struggling KC offense to the point of embarrassment. In 18 rushes only 39 yards. (Bubby Brister had 38 yards on a "Naked"bootleg around the right side for the Broncos' first TD.) The trouble at the quarterback position in KC has not been resolved. Many would say Marty Schottenheimer succumbed to the fan and media pressure to start Rich Gannon; well the know-it-alls on the talk shows will have to face the reality that neither one is very good right now. Th e Kansas City Chiefs got beat "like a one egg puddin".
It starts when your very young playing your first "Little League" event. Pee Wee football, Little League baseball, or what ever your first organized sport. The first things learned are the rules of the game,do not argue with the officials, and the equipment necessary. The very next thing you learn is "good sportsmanship" (not always evidenced by parents) and that this is a game and you're having fun. In JR. High School you first hear the term "Rabbit Ears" and quickly learn if the "other guys" find out you are reacting to something they said, "they own you". The rational behind this is very simple; if you are concentrating on what was said, you cannot have complete concentration on your own performance. In the number of years it takes to make it to the "big leagues" today's pro athlete has seen every bad call and certainly heard every insult to mother, brother, sister and all manner of lineage. It is because of this "training" we will not jump on the band wagon to go after Derrick Thomas and his inexcusable behavior late in the 4th quarter. It is for this reason (and the up-coming league fines) that the only explanation is that correctly expressed by Dan Dierdorf of ABC; "he just snapped." Millionaires playing a violent game. The NFL will not tolerate the Thomas display but he should be judged by his career and not the last few minutes of one game. If Shannon Sharpe got under his skin or he disagreed with the officiating he has seen and heard it all before. Derrick Thomas is a great football player (Denver tried very hard to sign him) and this should be considered an aberration and it will cost him some cash. In much the same manner of Romo and J.J. Stokes even great professional athletes can "lose it". The heroes in tonight's game were the Denver Broncos for not retaliating to the actions of Thomas. The whole world saw why Denver is the "Class of the NFL".
Denver over Cinci 33-26
by Justin and Nicky Richards
The mark of a good team is to play poorly and still win. That is why it's called a team. On a day when John Elway (best at his position including Farve) was not his usual spectacular self, the rest of the team stepped up. This was a total team effort. Davis running the ball and Sharpe and McCaffery making catches and the special teams coming through when they had to.
Early game, on the road, on turf, averaging 400 plus yards a game against a team giving up that same number, is many times a recipe for disaster. Denver gave up 110 yards of real estate to Cory Dillon (and speaking of real estate why not give the "Licata Appraisal Group" a call at 303-768-8980).
Terrell Davis leads the league in TDs, scoring 2 against the Bengals and rushing for 144 yards. (and speaking of yards why not stop by the "Colorado Sports Cafe" for a "yard" of beer, 72nd and Pecos.)
Cincinnati, at 2-5 coming into Sundays game has been the source of much controversy from the fans and the media, but coach Bruce Coslin certainly had his team prepared. Where does he get all that saliva anyway? (and speaking of saliva why not call Denver's best Dentist Gregg L Lage at 303-427-4552)
Jason Elam's 33 yard field goal was remarked by one of the television announcers (in reference to last weeks record setting kick of 63 yards) that "this one's is quite a bit shorter". (and speaking of shorter stop by and see Tony at "Arvada Wine and Spirits" 64th &Sheridan)
Ed McCaffery had a career day with 7 catches for 143 yards and Phil Sims, former quarterback for the New York Giants, mentioned that McCaffery played for the Giants but had been cut. (and speaking of cuts listen to Denver's best rock band, The Hammerin Hanks at
www.micro-exp.com/hammerhanks)
Sims once again noted that Neil O'Donnel should have been given a penalty for intentionally grounding the ball to avoid a sack. Instant replay showed the officials made the correct call. (but the instant you get into trouble, call Robert Bettenburg, Attorney at Law-303-650-1505)
With 2:42 left in the game the score was even 26-26 but a beautiful, although often seen off tackle running play turned outside, by Davis, gave Denver the lead for good. (and speaking of beautiful why not set your next hair appointment with Lee at Arvada Hair Company 303-420-6655)
The Denver Broncos are without question the best football team in the NFL and the pressure to stay that way must be taking a toll. Is it me or does Mike Shanahan look quite a bit leaner in the face than last year?
Is this a "Perfect team? Well, they are so far and only the Miami Dolphins have turned in a "perfect" season by going 17-0. John Elway's commercial for the new stadium is additional proof of the pressure brought to bear and another distraction this team does not need. Unfortunately voting yes on the new stadium is the lesser of two evils. Denver is just too big a sports town not to have professional football...ask Cleveland or Baltimore. The upgrade to a new stadium is in Denver's best interest. (and speaking of upgrades see the expert computer professionals at Micro Express International www.micro-exp.com 303-429-2400)Main Page

Denver 9-0 without Johnby Justin and Nicky Richards Nov 8, 1998 Denver, Colorado.
It was a perfect day for football. Fall, cool not cold, and sunny at game time. Final score Denver 27 San Diego 10, but the unspoken nightmare for Denver fans came suddenly true. No John Elway. Not the way many feared, Elway helped off the field with a season ending injury. When the time comes it will probably be like this day. No warning, no hint, just Bubby Brister starting. When Elway left the game for good(strained rib cage muscle) after the second offensive series it became apparent whose team this was...Mike Shanahan's.
Brister at times looked quite masterful, like a veteran player given a back up assignment. They prepare, not in the hopes of an injury, but in case of emergency. Give Bubby Brister an A+ for being ready and taking the controls of Shanahan's car. (reference Shannon Sharpe's comment about borrowing the car and not bringing it back bent.)
In 2001we will have a new stadium but no John Elway, unless as a coach (doubtful, not enough money) but you had a sense of the future, pondering the back up to Brister. As fans of football you had to feel a little sorry for Ryan Leaf. That type of performance could well await young Griese opening day 2001.
San Diego's defense, first in the NFL against the rush, allowed Terrell Davis only 69 yards but 2 touchdowns and Davis continues to lead the league with 16 TDs. Ed McCaffery's spectacular catches are almost becoming routine and punter Tom Rouen kept the lackluster San Diego offense constantly inside their own 20 yard line.
Without Elway in the the line up there is no electricity, no anticipation that at any moment a scramble and the big play that turns games around or firmly determines the outcome. Today's game was just another football game, but in the final analysis Mike Shanahan has put together a very solid team. (duh)
Golden Arm = 50KJohn Elway joined Dan Marino as only the second man in NFL history to pass for over 50 thousand yards in a career, today in Mile High Stadium. This seemingly impossible achievement was almost overlooked in what was, at least for three quarters, a close football game. Most of the focus was on if the Raiders could upset the juggernaut that is the Denver Broncos. Final score Denver 40, Oakland 14. Considering some of the great quarterbacks who have played in the NFL, Baugh,Unitas,Tarkenton,Montana, John Elway finds himself in rather unique company. His retirement, whenever it happens, will be a sad day for professional football. We may not see the likes of his ilk in our lifetimes.
Early this week radio talk show personality, Sandy Clough from "KKFN", said " there are alot of bad coaches in the NFL". It matters not in what context this was said but only who said it. We completely missed Sandy's career in the NFL. We cannot find any mention of his taking even one snap in the NFL. Nor can we find any reference to said "sports pundant" having participated in an NFL mini-camp. It is therefor puzzling to us what qualifications Mr. Clough possesses as regards his observations. We surmised his judgement must come from perhaps salary equality but alas we find no evidence of this. Maybe his standing in sports journalism, top of his class as compared to other sportswriters, but oh no, he can hardly be mistaken for an award winning scribe. Of the thousands of football coaches in this country only 28 have the privilege of coaching in the NFL. If we also missed Sandy's NFL coaching career we apologize. Maybe Dan Reeves is just lucky. This is like your waitress reminding you to change your oil. It may or may not be true, but she would have no clue. You are left to your own conclusions.
Denver 11-0 and who can stop them?
What say we put Sandy Clough and Bob Kravitz in a room and, you know, see what happens.
Watch out for the Avalanche. Do not be surprised if the Colorado Avalanche go on a very hot streak. This looks like a team ready to break out. A very slow start, and unimpressive goal tending from Roy, make us believe this team is ready to kick it up a notch. Roy is arguably sill the best goalie in the NHL. When the offense starts hitting on all 8 cylinders and Patrick becomes more focused, we think this team will look like the play-off team it is.
AVs Swamp Tampa Bay 8-1
Nov 13, 1998
Friday the 13th and it was very unlucky for the Tampa Bay Lighting. Joe Sakic with 4 points reached 900 for his career. We think this is the start of a streak and we are going to evaluate the next 5 games alone for stats. Look out NHL the AVs are getting HOT.

The Colorado Avalanche showed how good they can be in defeating last years Stanly Cup Champions and firce rival Detroit 4-2 tonite in Denver. The phrase "speed kills" may have new meaning for the rest of the NHL with the new line of Forsberg, Sakic and Hejduk.
